Writing assignment
Goal: Read research about mathematics education and connect the findings to mathematics tasks that may be useful in future teaching.
Knowledge objective(s):
- Learn about current research regarding mathematics teaching.
- Prepare mathematics tasks for future use.
Skills objective(s):
- Prepare to lead mathematics tasks during class time.
- Practice written communication skills when summarizing research.
Tasks
- Read assigned texts that are posted in Class Schedule
- Read "choose-your-own" (CYO) article(s) that are connected to the assigned texts
- CYO should be related to the assigned texts so I recommend reading those first
- CYO may be a single research-based article (containing data or meta-analysis) or two non-research-based articles (like teacher blogs)
- Provide a URL or a PDF copy for each CYO
- Provide a brief summary (bullet points or paragraph) of each CYO that highlights aspects you want to remember for your future teaching. For each, also discuss why you choose
- Possible resources:
- Summarize each article with important aspects and/or quotations (using APA style) for class discussion and future use in the manuscript. Bullet points are recommended instead of paragraphs for easier access during class discussion.
- Discussion question
- Ask an open-ended question for class discussion. This may include questions you still have.
- Leave space for fellow group members to answer your question during class.
- (recommended) Create a mathematics task based on the readings
- Be prepared to try your mathematical task with your fellow students. This includes bringing necessary materials to class.
Note: APA style is used in educational writing so we will us it in class. For more information, see citations, websites, reference lists
Submission
Bring a paper copy to class.
Authorized absences should also answer their own discussion question from the point of view of the week's readings.
